Job Description

Internship Opportunities – City of Lauderhill

The City of Lauderhill offers comprehensive internship opportunities designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in a municipal government environment. Internships are available with either payment or educational credit.

Program Overview:
Interns will be exposed to projects and operations within a municipal government setting, gaining experience parallel to their academic studies. All City Interns will work directly under the supervision of their respective Department Head and will be responsible for technical work in their corresponding area/department.

Core Duties and Functions (may include, but are not limited to):
Learning and Skill Development: Learn and develop skills specific to their designated field of study.
Communication and Interaction: Develop skills to communicate and interact productively with a diverse workforce and citizenry.
Leadership and Governance: Develop the ability to lead and manage in public governance.
Policy Participation: Develop the ability to participate and contribute to policy processes.
Analytical Skills: Develop the ability to analyze, synthesize, think critically, solve problems, and make decisions.
Public Service Perspective: Develop the ability to articulate and apply a public service perspective.
Administrative Support: Assist in various administrative functions of the department.
Project Support: Assist in needs analysis for projects and research solutions for identified needs.
Process Improvement: Assist in updating department processes and procedures.
Reporting and Compliance: Assist in creating reports and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Program Term:
• Internships typically range from 2 to 9 months, with the exact duration determined by the department.

Available Positions:
• Currently, internships are available within the City Commission department.

Intern Expectations:
• Candidates selected for an internship are expected to comply with all City and Department rules and regulations.
• Interns will be expected to complete all assigned tasks and attend any events deemed necessary by the Department.

Internship Classifications:

1. For Education Credit:
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students attending an accredited college/university where their degree program requires completion of an on-the-job internship in their major field.
Requirements:
• Must provide the university/college course number.
• Must obtain approval from the City Manager.
• The student is responsible for paying for the course.
• The City will place the student in an on-the-job learning environment compatible with their course requirements.

2. Paid Internship:
Compensation: Interns are compensated at $20 per hour.
Duration: The time period is set for 2 to 9 months.
Work Hours: Work hours are coordinated between the student and the department, not to exceed 29 hours per week.
Eligibility: Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the fields of study outlined in the corresponding internship posting.
Availability: A limited amount of paid internships are offered based on funding allocation in the City’s annual adopted budget.

3. Unpaid Internship:
Work Hours: The student is willing to work up to 29 hours per week as an unpaid intern.
Purpose: To obtain valuable experience in their chosen field of study.

Minimum Qualifications (for all classifications):
Enrollment Proof: Provide proof of active enrollment in an accredited college/university (unofficial or official transcript).
Resume: Submit a comprehensive resume.
References: Provide two references (professional and/or from professors).
GPA: Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Availability: Be able to work up to 29 hours per week with a flexible schedule, depending on Department needs.

Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license.

Veteran’s Preference:
The City of Lauderhill encourages applications from certain servicemembers, veterans, and their spouses/family members.
