Business Intelligence Engineer Intern Job Description

Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, typically between 8 am and 5 pm. Specific hours may vary based on team norms.

Location: This internship is available at various locations across the United States, including:

• Greater Seattle Area (Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond)
• Greater Bay Area (San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara)
• Greater DMV (DC, MD, VA)
• Austin (TX)
• New York City (NY)
• Minneapolis (MN)

Start Dates: Summer 2025 (Starts May/June 2025)

Responsibilities:

Build BI Solutions: Develop small- to mid-size business intelligence (BI) solutions, including data sets, queries, reports, dashboards, and analyses, or components of larger solutions.
Data-Driven Decisions: Utilize well-defined requirements to create solutions that enable effective, data-driven business decisions.
Project Delivery: Ensure timely delivery of end products.
Data Structures: Create and populate data structures using schema definition languages (e.g., DDL, SDL, XSD, RDF).
Code Quality: Write secure, stable, testable, and maintainable code with minimal defects, and automate manual processes where possible.
Actionable Insights: Utilize industry analytics visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, QuickSight, MicroStrategy, PowerBI) and statistical methods (e.g., t-test, Chi-squared) to deliver actionable insights to stakeholders.
BI Innovation: Invent, refine, and develop BI solutions to meet business and team goals.
Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot data, analyses, and code, research root causes, propose solutions, and take ownership of resolutions.

Qualifications:

Basic:

• Experience with data querying or modeling using SQL.
• Experience building and maintaining basic data artifacts (e.g., ETL, data models, queries).
• Experience with industry analytics visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, QuickSight, MicroStrategy, PowerBI) and statistical methods (e.g., t-test, Chi-squared).
• At least 18 years of age.
• Ability to work 40 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
• Currently working towards a Bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, computer engineering, information management/systems, business analytics, or equivalent technical discipline with a conferral date between October 2025 and December 2028.

Preferred:

• Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Java, or R).
• Knowledge of data modeling and data pipeline design.
• Experience applying basic statistical methods (e.g., regression) to business problems.
• Knowledge of improving code quality and optimizing BI processes (e.g., speed, cost, reliability).
• Experience with relational and star schema data modeling concepts.
• Prior technical internship experience (if applicable).
• Ability to manage ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent verbal/written communication and data presentation skills.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Enrolled in a Master’s degree or advanced technical degree with a conferral date between October 2025 and December 2028.

Compensation:

• Base pay ranges from $35.63/hr to $79.62/hr depending on location and experience.
• Potential for equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation.
