Internship Summary: Building Automation Intern

ATS is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic summer intern to join our Operations team, providing crucial support for the engineering and project startup phases of Building Automation Systems. As a Building Automation Intern, you will gain comprehensive exposure to numerous facets of the energy management industry. This includes assisting with engineering design, delving into the intricacies of Direct Digital Control (DDC) programming, and acquiring invaluable hands-on experience with mechanical systems on active project sites.

This internship presents a unique opportunity to learn about the diverse aspects of a Building Automation Project Engineer’s career and to apply your newly acquired building automation skills in practical settings. These hands-on experiences are complemented by opportunities to participate in formal training courses, engage in insightful sessions with guest speakers from various departments across ATS, and forge lasting professional connections within the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Team Support: Work collaboratively as an integral part of a project team, providing essential support to Engineers and Technicians on critical project tasks.
  • System Testing & Startup: Assist with the functional testing of mechanical equipment on project sites through active participation in Building Automation Systems (BAS) checkout and startup procedures.
  • Quality Control: Learn how to safely and accurately conduct quality control checks on newly installed systems, ensuring adherence to high standards.
  • Training & Development: Participate in both classroom-based and self-paced training programs focused on BAS-specific topics, including Direct Digital Control (DDC) programming, design utilizing AutoCAD, networking fundamentals, and more.
  • Engineering Documentation: Support the engineering team by accurately updating drawing sets and wiring diagrams.
  • BAS Software Utilization: Learn to effectively use BAS user-interface software to create data trendlogs, configure fault detection alarms, and establish functional system schedules.

Work Environment And Physical Demands

This position operates in a hybrid model, combining office-based work at our various office locations with field assignments. Travel to local project sites is a regular requirement, and all mileage expenses incurred for business travel will be reimbursed.

The role frequently involves physical work at project jobsites, where you will typically spend a significant portion of your time on your feet. Project jobsites present typical construction and outdoor conditions, necessitating the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety purposes. Physical demands include occasionally lifting and exerting up to 25 pounds of force, as well as engaging in small repetitive motions and using small tools, including computers and peripherals.

Compensation

The pay for this internship ranges from $21 to $30 per hour, depending on your experience and qualifications.

Position Type And Hours

  • Position Type: This is a temporary internship position.
  • Start Date: Anticipated start in the Summer of 2026.
  • End Date: Offers a flexible end-date to accommodate academic schedules.
