Budget Analyst I | University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, located in Lincoln, Nebraska. The College of Engineering is dedicated to training the next generation of engineers and addressing global challenges. This position is vital for providing essential budget and financial analysis, directly supporting the Dean’s office in strategic decision-making and ensuring the sound financial management of the college.

• Mission: To provide critical financial analysis and budget oversight, supporting strategic decision-making for the College of Engineering Dean’s office and maintaining fiscal health.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Analysis: Provide comprehensive budget and financial analysis specifically for the College of Engineering Dean’s office.
• Oversight: Review and analyze overall College and departmental budgets to inform and support key decision-making processes.
• Ad Hoc Reporting: Perform specialized, on-demand analysis of financial data to assist with dean-level strategic planning.
• Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve budget and financial commitment issues, offering expert advice to unit leaders based on complex fund type requirements.
• Reconciliation: Reconcile and continuously monitor the financial status of all college funds, including state, revolving, and foundation accounts, on a monthly basis.
• Budget Development: Assist in the creation of the annual operating budget, manage day-to-day operational budgets, and maintain SAP Organizational Management data.
• Representation: Represent the college’s financial interests and perspectives on various university committees and task forces.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, establishing core knowledge in budget, finance, or analytical work.
• Experience: Four years of experience in budget, finance, analytics, or related work, including a strong understanding of large integrated financial management systems.
• Skills: Advanced proficiency in Excel or similar spreadsheet software, working knowledge of general accounting practices and financial reporting, demonstrated ability to work independently, and strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills supported by excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication.
• Bonus: Working knowledge of the UNL Budget System, direct experience with SAP, project accounting experience, experience using AI for data analysis within Microsoft Excel, and skilled with database software programs.
