Job Description (Baking/Pastry Arts Intern)
This position is for a Baking/Pastry Arts Intern at The Hotel Hershey. The internship provides a comprehensive learning experience in a professional kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities:
The intern will primarily execute general cooking duties, focusing on the pastry and baking aspects. Key responsibilities include:
• Preparing station and pastry product in assigned areas according to Hotel Hershey standards.
• Preparing food in adherence to The Hotel Hershey’s standards.
• Maintaining a neat and clean food production area.
• Following guidelines provided by the Sous Chef and Pastry Cook I.
• Controlling waste by adhering to company procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Assisting other areas of the kitchen when necessary.
• Performing other duties as assigned by management.
Learning Opportunities:
Interns will gain practical experience in various culinary aspects, including:
• À la carte service.
• Bulk production for banquets.
• Banquet execution.
• Morning baker positions.
With demonstrated interest, interns will also have the opportunity to learn about and observe wedding cakes, confections, and showpieces. Rotation within departments will be determined by the student’s abilities and desire to excel.
Qualifications:
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be a student currently enrolled in a Baking/Pastry Arts program or a recent Baking/Pastry Arts graduate within 6 months of applying.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Must have own knives.
• Good communication skills are required to communicate closely with the Sous Chef and Pastry Cook I.
Job Demands:
• Flexible shifts are required, including weekends and holidays.
• Physical requirements may include standing, sitting, hearing, speaking and communicating verbally, performing detailed work at close distances, finger dexterity, lifting (35-50 lbs), bending, and walking.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures, subject to extreme heat.
• Ability to work in a hectic, fast-paced environment.
• Employees must provide their own approved slip-resistant, non-skid shoes.
• This is a union position, and the work schedule will be based on union seniority. Candidates must be able to meet scheduled requirements, which will most likely include evening and weekend hours.
