Detailed Job Description: Back-End Software Engineer Intern (Summer 2025)

Job Summary: PayPal seeks highly skilled Back-End Software Engineering interns to contribute to their innovative payment solutions. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers, contributing to the development, maintenance, and improvement of large-scale, high-volume systems powering PayPal’s global operations. This involves working across multiple business units (PayPal, Braintree, Venmo, Paydiant).

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain high-volume, scalable software using languages such as Java, SQL, and REST.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (front-end developers, designers, product managers, and other business units).
• Write clean, maintainable, and scalable code (Python, Java, Node.js).
• Design, develop, and maintain databases, ensuring data integrity and performance optimization.
• Participate in code reviews, contributing to improved coding standards and best practices.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize back-end services.
• Estimate engineering efforts and design, implement, and test code changes.
• Contribute to pushing code to live and triaging production issues.

Basic Requirements:

• Strong applied software development experience – building, breaking, and rebuilding applications.
• Solid understanding of server-side languages (Python, Java, Node.js, or similar).
• Familiarity with database technologies (SQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.).
• Understanding of Web Services, SOA, and REST APIs.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Enthusiasm for continuous learning and exploration of new technologies.

Internship Program Information:

• Summer 2025 program only (no Spring or Fall internships).
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Must return to school in Fall 2025.
• Must reside in the U.S. during the internship.
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S. for the summer.
• Location varies within U.S. PayPal office locations. PayPal utilizes a balanced hybrid work model (3 days in the office, 2 days remote).
