Job Description

About Canon Production Printing

Canon Production Printing (CPP) is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of high-tech printing products and workflow software for the commercial printing market. A part of Canon, a worldwide provider of imaging technologies and services, CPP operates on three continents with approximately 3300 employees (as of the end of 2022). Its global headquarters are located in Venlo, the Netherlands.

Job Description: Bachelor End Project (Hybrid) – Computer Vision for Automated Quality Checks

CPP is seeking a student for a Bachelor End Project (hybrid) to develop a machine learning model for automated defect detection in Organic PhotoConductor (OPC) layers used in their toner printers. The OPCs are composed of multiple thin layers of organic material, and any defects (fibers, dust, etc.) can significantly impact print quality. Currently, human operators visually inspect each OPC, leading to inconsistencies and errors in classification.

The Project:

The core task involves building and optimizing a machine learning model, likely a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), to automatically identify various types of defects in OPC images. CPP has already collected a substantial dataset of tens of thousands of labeled images representing several dozen distinct defect types. The student will be responsible for:

Model Development: Creating a CNN (or other suitable model) for defect classification.
Model Optimization: Fine-tuning model parameters to achieve high accuracy and performance.
Performance Evaluation: Rigorously assessing the model’s ability to accurately identify defects.

This project aims to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using computer vision techniques to automate quality control, reducing reliance on manual inspection and improving consistency.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a computer science, electrical engineering, information systems engineering, data science, or related field with an industrial interface.
• Strong interest in implementing AI solutions in automated production lines.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of interacting effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to think strategically and consider the long-term implications of decisions.
• Availability for a hybrid Bachelor End Project.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Internship/Graduation compensation of €500 per month (full-time).
• Travel cost reimbursement (if not possessing an ‘OV-weekcard’).
• Networking opportunities with professionals from various disciplines.
• A challenging project with skilled mentorship.
• A company culture emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and ownership.
