Job Description
About the Company
Baby Sign Language Basics is an organization that offers “Parent & Me” classes focused on baby sign language. Their mission is to teach parents and caregivers how to use American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary with pre-verbal babies and toddlers. The goal is to enhance bonding, facilitate early communication, support speech, language, and literacy development, and reduce frustration for both children and caregivers. While generally catering to hearing, typically developing children, all abilities are welcome in their classes, with each child attending alongside their own parent or caregiver. Classes are held at Baby Garten Studio in South Park.
Job Description: Baby Sign Language Parent & Me Class Intern with Possibility of PT Position
This opportunity begins as an internship with the potential to evolve into a part-time teaching position. The role involves leading classes where families learn to use ASL vocabulary with their pre-verbal babies and toddlers.
• Role and Responsibilities (Intern & Eventual Teacher):
• Singing, reading stories, and blowing bubbles with families.
• Sharing ASL signs and communication strategies with parents and caregivers.
• Learning comprehensive lesson plans and songs associated with the class.
• As an eventual teacher, organizing oneself and working without direct supervision.
• Skills/Experience Required:
• Early childhood or speech/language training is highly valued.
• Minimum ASL I proficiency or equivalent (e.g., signing with a family member).
• Direct experience working with babies and toddlers.
• Demonstrated warmth, a sense of humor, and patience, ensuring the class is fun for babies and informative for parents.
• Excellent speaking skills to effectively capture the attention of both babies and chatty parents.
• Confidence in leading families in songs (excellent singing voice is less important than confidence).
• Reliable transportation and the ability to commute to the South Park location.
• Internship Specifics:
• The primary purpose of the internship is for applicants to learn to teach the class for potential future employment.
• Interns will sit in on classes to gain first-hand experience and determine if the position is a good fit.
• There is a significant time investment required for both the applicant and the instructor to learn lesson plans, songs, and other class elements.
• Details of Eventual Teaching Position:
• Pay: $40-$50 per hour.
• Schedule: Classes typically take place mid-day, starting at 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, accommodating the naptimes of this age group.
• Suitability: This position is described as most suitable for those seeking an additional part-time income stream, students, or stay-at-home parents (SAHMs).
• Autonomy: The teaching role requires individuals to be self-organized and eventually capable of working independently.
• Application Process:
• Interested applicants must first make contact.
• Further details regarding the application will be provided after initial contact.
• A mandatory component of the application is to submit a video demonstrating the applicant signing along with a simple children’s song and a short children’s book (typically a board book).
• Important Notes:
• This is explicitly *not• an ASL class; it is an early communication parenting class.
• Applicants should not apply if they have any reservations about ASL vocabulary being used to facilitate early communication for hearing children.
