Job Description
About the Company:
SpaceX was founded on the belief that a future where humanity explores the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we do not. The company is actively developing the technologies to make this a reality, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. A core value is ensuring the safety of crew and payload in all space endeavors.
Job Description: Avionics Hardware Engineer
SpaceX is seeking an Avionics Hardware Engineer to play a crucial role in developing and producing the avionics hardware for their spacecraft. This position offers the unique opportunity to be involved in all stages of a product’s lifecycle, from initial development through production and launch. The work will be multidisciplinary, focusing on electronic design, reliability, and manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
• Provide extreme ownership of avionics hardware for flight across all areas of the product life cycle. This encompasses the entire journey of the hardware, from conception to launch and beyond.
• Drive changes to electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to improve reliability and manufacturability. The engineer will be actively involved in optimizing designs for both performance and efficient production.
• Perform root cause investigations to characterize off-nominal unit behavior and mitigate risk. Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills are paramount in identifying and resolving issues.
• Develop high-reliability hardware to expand vehicle capabilities. The role demands innovation and the creation of robust, dependable components.
• Derive engineering justification to resolve production issues throughout assembly, test, and vehicle integration. The engineer will need to effectively communicate and defend technical decisions.
• Design test setups and execute hardware validation through benchtop and environmental testing. Hands-on experience in testing and validation is essential.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering.
• 1+ years of experience in electronics hardware design (academic projects, internships, and professional experience all qualify).
• 1+ years of experience with electrical test equipment (e.g., multimeters, signal generators, oscilloscopes).
Preferred Skills and Experience:
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere.
• Familiarity managing projects from start to finish.
• Self-motivation with strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
• Creative problem-solving skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience with analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
• Proficiency in electrical schematic capture and PCB design (eCAD) software (e.g., Altium, Orcad).
• Experience with mechanical design (mCAD) software (e.g., NX, Solidworks).
• Experience with circuit simulation software (e.g., SPICE, LTSPICE).
• Knowledge of Design for Excellence (DFX), root cause analysis, derating, and related analyses.
• Experience with digital communications interfaces including SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, and RS422.
• Familiarity with common circuit blocks including filters, power supplies, and microcontrollers.
Additional Requirements: Extended hours and weekend work may be required.
Compensation and Benefits: The advertisement details salary ranges for different experience levels, as well as a comprehensive benefits package including stock options, bonuses, health insurance, paid leave, and more. ITAR compliance is also a requirement.
