Job Description:
This is an internship opportunity focusing on automation within Marmon’s manufacturing and distribution facilities. The intern will be involved in all phases of automation projects, from initial assessment to final implementation and support. Specific responsibilities include:
• Site Visits and Assessment: Visiting Marmon facilities to evaluate automation opportunities and understand current operations by working with senior staff.
• Technology Research and Selection: Researching and comparing various automation technologies and solutions based on factors like cost, functionality, lead time, support, reliability, and more.
• Prototyping and Design: Prototyping technologies and processes. Designing, building, and implementing simple technologies in-house using existing engineering expertise (without external integrators).
• Bid Specification Development: Leveraging learnings from site visits and prototypes to create detailed bid specifications for more complex systems requiring external integrators.
• Equipment Implementation and Support: Supporting the buy-off process and activities to bring new equipment online.
• IIoT Integration: Working with the company’s Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) team to implement connectivity and data collection solutions.
• Project Management Assistance: Assisting in project management from scope development through final system delivery, including budget and schedule management.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Education: Sophomore or Junior pursuing an engineering or engineering technology degree (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or Automation).
• Experience: Previous experience with automation (jobs, internships, co-op assignments, class projects, extracurricular activities).
• Work Environment: Comfortable spending significant time in manufacturing and distribution environments.
• Teamwork and Independence: Ability to work both independently and effectively within a team.
• IIoT Interest: Demonstrated interest in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
• CAD Proficiency: Working knowledge of SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or a similar CAD package.
• Travel: 20-30% domestic travel.
• Continuous Improvement: Openness to training in Continuous Improvement and LEAN tools.
• Location: Preference for candidates based at a Marmon Transportation Company within the United States, with the ability to commit to multiple work semesters.
