Job Description: Audit Intern
KPMG is seeking an Audit Intern to join its Audit Services team. This internship offers the opportunity to play a vital role in conducting financial statement audits for clients, primarily Japanese clients or non-Japanese companies operating in Japan.
Responsibilities:
• Financial Statement Audits: Work collaboratively within a team to conduct financial statement audits for capital markets, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of client financial information while adhering to principles of objectivity and independence. Contribute to improving clients’ operational effectiveness while maintaining the highest professional integrity.
• Risk Assessment: Develop an understanding of client-specific risks by reviewing financial results, external information, current business trends, and client transactions, with a focus on Japanese clients or those requiring strategic assistance in Japan.
• Audit Documentation: Prepare clear and well-structured audit documentation outlining the understanding of clients’ processes and technology systems.
• Testing and Execution: Under guidance, execute and document testing of client controls and financial statement account balances using appropriate standards and terminology. Ensure high-quality audit execution through assigned tasks and professional interactions with clients and the engagement team.
• Data and Analytics (D&A): Support the use of D&A in the audit, including data extraction and analysis. Utilize technologies and tools such as AI, Excel, Alteryx, SQL, Python, and Power BI to perform substantive audit procedures and prepare related documentation.
Qualifications:
• Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor of Accountancy, Master of Accountancy, or equivalent. Must be pursuing requirements for CPA licensure in the relevant state (where the office is located) prior to becoming an Audit Associate. Additional academic credits must be completed after the internship to obtain a degree and/or meet CPA eligibility.
• GPA: Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Language Skills: Bilingual in English and Japanese, capable of using both languages effectively in a business environment.
• Technical Skills: Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data and analytics preferred. Experience with data analysis tools like Alteryx or Power BI is advantageous. Knowledge of technical accounting, financial reporting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) is required. Proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel) and aptitude for learning KPMG audit tools and client applications are essential.
• Soft Skills: Demonstrated commitment to quality service, strong communication, time management, and relationship-building skills. Must possess sound professional judgment, professional skepticism, adaptability, teamwork skills, and leadership experience. Project management skills are a plus.
• Location: Must reside within a commutable distance to the office and be able to travel to client sites as needed using personal transportation. Expect in-person work at the KPMG office or client sites for approximately three days per week, with potential travel and overnight stays for some client engagements.
