Job Description: Audit Intern
KPMG is seeking an Audit Intern to join its Audit Services team. The intern will play an integral role in conducting financial statement audits, primarily for Japanese clients or non-Japanese companies operating in Japan, contributing to the accuracy and reliability of client financial information. The position requires upholding the principles of objectivity and independence, while contributing to the overall effectiveness of clients’ operations and maintaining high professional integrity.
Responsibilities:
• Work as part of a team to conduct financial statement audits for Japanese clients and non-Japanese companies requiring strategic assistance in Japan.
• Develop an understanding of client-specific risks by reviewing financial results, external information, business trends, and client transactions.
• Prepare clear and well-structured audit documentation detailing the understanding of clients’ processes and technology systems.
• Execute and document testing of client controls and financial statement account balances using appropriate standards and terminology, under guidance.
• Support the execution of high-quality audits through task performance and professional client and team interactions.
• Utilize data and analytics (D&A) in the audit process, including data extraction and analysis, employing tools such as AI, Excel, Alteryx, SQL, Python, and Power BI. Prepare related documentation.
• Maintain KPMG’s respectful and courteous work environment through acting with integrity, professionalism, and personal responsibility.
Qualifications:
• Enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor of Accountancy, Master of Accountancy, or equivalent.
• Progressing toward CPA licensure requirements in the office’s state (completion of necessary academic credits before starting as an Audit Associate).
• Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Bilingual in English and Japanese, proficient in using both languages in a business setting.
• Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data and analytics preferred; experience with data analysis tools like Alteryx or Power BI is also preferred.
• Knowledge of technical accounting and financial reporting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Proficiency in various computer applications, especially MS Office (particularly Excel), and aptitude for learning KPMG audit tools and client applications.
• Demonstrated commitment to quality service, strong communication and time management skills, relationship-building abilities, sound professional judgment, professional skepticism, flexibility, adaptability, and teamwork. Leadership experience and project management skills are a plus.
• Must reside within commuting distance of the office and be able to travel to client sites as needed. The position requires in-person work at a KPMG office or client site for an average of three days per week; some client site locations may require travel and overnight/extended stays.
