The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, a prominent law firm. This position is vital for providing substantive procedural guidance to attorneys and staff, ensuring firm-wide compliance with court rules, and maintaining accurate tracking of litigation deadlines. The Assistant Managing Clerk helps oversee critical docketing operations and plays a significant part in leading the firm’s dedicated docketing team.

• Mission: Ensure compliance with court rules, maintain accurate litigation deadlines, and support the firm’s docketing operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Filing Management: Assist with the review, preparation, and electronic filing of documents in federal, state, appellate, and bankruptcy courts.
• Deadline Analysis & Guidance: Review and analyze court documents to identify all applicable deadlines, providing guidance to legal staff and attorneys on court rules and litigation procedures.
• Quality Control & Collaboration: Collaborate with, manage, and oversee the quality control and work product of other staff members, providing guidance to enhance efficiency, reduce redundancies, and ensure consistency in docketing and calendaring practices.
• External Liaison: Liaise with court personnel and external vendors, coordinating service of legal documents including subpoenas and notices.
• Procedural Updates & Training: Work with the Managing Clerk and Managing Attorney to keep staff informed of changes in federal and state court procedures, distributing information, and assisting with personnel training.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree required; core domain knowledge in legal procedures, court rules, and litigation processes.
• Experience: 6 or more years of relevant experience.
• Skills: Superior knowledge of New York, California, and federal rules of civil procedure; exceptional written and verbal communication skills; strong problem-solving and analytical skills to make sound decisions.
• Bonus: JD or some law school coursework; strong Electronic Filing experience on various state and federal platforms; strong understanding of procedural research and litigation procedures.
