Analyst – Interest Rate and Commodity Derivatives | Flagstar Bank
The Tone:
This is an early career position at Flagstar Bank, located in New York, NY. This role provides critical analytical and operational support to the Capital Markets division, focusing on interest rate and commodity hedging solutions. The individual will contribute to the growth of the bank’s derivatives platform by supporting senior sales professionals and managing key aspects of the derivatives lifecycle.

• Mission: Support the structuring, pricing, execution, and risk management of interest rate and commodity hedging solutions for corporate, commercial, energy, real estate, and private banking clients.
• Tech Stack: Excel (pivot tables, financial modeling), Bloomberg (preferred), market-data platforms (preferred), derivatives pricing tools (preferred)
What You’ll Actually Do
• Market Analysis: Monitor interest rate markets, central bank policy, macroeconomic trends, and cross-commodity fundamentals to prepare daily and weekly market updates for internal teams.
• Client Support: Run pricing models, scenario tests, and stress cases for interest rate and commodity strategies, preparing client-ready materials such as trade ideas, pitchbooks, and risk profiles.
• Trade Execution: Coordinate end-to-end trade execution with sales, trading, middle office, and operations, drafting and reviewing term sheets, confirmations, and booking instructions.
• Risk Management: Assist with counterparty credit exposure tracking, mark-to-market monitoring, and limit usage analysis, ensuring adherence to internal controls and bank risk policies.
• Platform Enhancement: Participate in efforts to improve the derivatives platform, including pricing tools, analytics dashboards, pipeline tracking, and digital client content.
The Must-Haves
• Background: High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred. Understanding of financial markets, fixed-income products, commodities, or derivatives concepts.
• Experience: Internship experience in sales & trading, energy risk, corporate treasury, or commercial banking preferred.
• Skills: Strong quantitative skills with proficiency in Excel, excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills to translate analytics into business insights.
• Bonus: Exposure to Bloomberg, market-data platforms, or derivatives pricing tools, and basic knowledge of hedge accounting (ASC 815), ISDA documentation, or credit processes.
