Accountant | State of Indiana

The Tone:
This is a full-time role with the State of Indiana, supporting the Family & Social Services Administration (FSSA). The State of Indiana is one of the largest employers in the state, offering a wide range of opportunities across more than 60 agencies. FSSA is a health care and social services funding agency that administers services to over 1.5 million Hoosiers. In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring financial accuracy and efficiency, directly contributing to the agency’s mission to compassionately connect individuals with essential services and community support.

• Mission: Ensure accurate financial records and timely processing of payments for services that support Hoosiers.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Transaction Management: Post transactions to appropriate ledgers and accounts, and verify the accuracy of all financial documents and records.
• Account Reconciliation: Reconcile accounts and subsidiary ledgers with the general ledger.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare, correct, and adjust entries prior to closing accounts, and prepare periodic financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements.
• Payment Authorization: Ensure the availability of funds before authorizing payment or submitting vouchers for payment to the State Auditor’s Office for approval.
• Accounting Procedure Development: Recommend changes in accounting policies and assist in developing accounting procedures.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Foundational knowledge of public accounting, governmental accounting, and agency function. A degree is not required.
• Experience: Ability to perform essential functions, including processing pre-auditing claim forms and invoices, and following up on submissions.
• Skills: Foundational knowledge of automated accounting systems, ability to solve standard accounting problems, ability to prepare clear, accurate and concise reports, and effective communication skills.
