Senior Accountant (HHSD) | CALUMET COUNTY

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at CALUMET COUNTY, located in Chilton, WI. CALUMET COUNTY operates as a governmental entity providing essential public services to its community. This Senior Accountant position is vital to the Health and Human Services Department (HHSD), ensuring accurate financial operations, regulatory compliance, and robust reporting. The role directly supports the department’s ability to serve the community by managing critical financial processes and systems.

• Mission: To manage complex accounting functions, financial reporting, and compliance for the Health and Human Services Department to ensure fiscal accuracy and operational integrity.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Core Accounting & Reporting: Perform daily accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations, meticulously preparing local, state, and federal financial reports while maintaining control of invoice payments on HSRS.
• Budget & Financial Analysis: Assist in the comprehensive preparation, monitoring, and analysis of the departmental budget, performing financial analysis and research to identify revenue sources and manage expenditure levels effectively.
• System Development & Maintenance: Contribute to the development and enhancement of computerized billing and accounting programs on the County mainframe, establishing robust systems for accounting, reporting, and data collection.
• Regulatory Compliance & Control: Monitor programs and functions for strict compliance with County, State, and Federal regulations, diligently resolving general ledger discrepancies, and determining proper expenditure placement by funding and service types.
• Program Costing & Contract Oversight: Calculate rates for department programs, determine and monitor client cost share for residential facilities, assist with year-end cost calculations, and manage the issuance and expenditure authorization process for contracts.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Senior-level professional possessing comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures, alongside the ability to readily acquire specific knowledge of governmental accounting practices.
• Experience: Proven capability to analyze complex accounting problems required in maintaining financial records and budgets, with demonstrated experience in ensuring accuracy and completeness of records and preparing clear, detailed reports.
• Skills: Core competencies include accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reconciliations, local, state, and federal financial reporting, budget preparation and analysis, financial analysis, general ledger discrepancy resolution, and chart of accounts maintenance.
• Bonus: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective public and professional working relationships, and capacity to assist in the development of departmental regulations and procedures.
