Accounting Assistant II | County of Riverside’s Sheriff’s Office

The Tone:
This is a full-time, in-person role with the County of Riverside’s Sheriff’s Office, located in Cabazon and Palm Desert, Riverside County, CA. As an Accounting Assistant II, you will perform vital accounting and fiscal duties, ensuring accurate financial operations and compliance with established guidelines, directly supporting the mission of service above self.

• Mission: Execute a variety of accounting and fiscal duties, involving research and interpretation of established guidelines, to maintain accurate financial records and operations.
• Tech Stack: Basic mathematical/fiscal computer applications, computerized accounting systems, standard office equipment (computers, calculators, cash registers, adding machines, duplicating machines).

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process Transactions: Process warrants, invoices, and manage accounts receivable or payable using manual or automated systems, ensuring proper documentation for approval.
• Review for Compliance: Examine claims, invoices, and other financial transactions to verify accuracy, legality, and adherence to established procedures, rules, or regulations.
• Reconcile Accounts: Perform weekly and monthly reconciliations of expenses, revenues, trial balance statements, various fund accounts (tax, trust, general, petty cash, department), and balance sheets to the general ledger.
• Manage Funds: Distribute monies paid or received to appropriate accounts and prepare accurate bank or account fund deposits.
• Generate Reports: Compile and prepare a variety of statistical reports, financial records, and periodic or special financial reports.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An early career accounting professional with one of the following: one year as an Accounting Assistant I with the County of Riverside (or equivalent); two years of experience reviewing, reconciling, and preparing financial accounts; OR completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting, finance, auditing, taxation, financial reporting, business finance, financial statement analysis, or closely related coursework from an accredited college or university.
• Experience: Expertise in basic methods, practices, and terminology of fiscal recordkeeping, business mathematics, common negotiable instruments, and methods of handling and controlling monies received and disbursed.
• Skills: Ability to make accurate mathematical computations, operate standard office equipment and computerized accounting systems, understand and maintain financial accounting files, recognize and correct computational errors, interpret and apply a variety of regulations, and perform research to resolve problems.
• Bonus: Knowledge of basic payroll practices and procedures, including FLSA requirements. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required for some positions.
