The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), located in Helena, MT, with potential for a hybrid remote work arrangement. MDT is responsible for ensuring accounting treatment is recorded in accordance with GAAP and maintaining accurate financial statements for the Department. This Accountant 2 position is vital for ensuring financial compliance, supporting cost efficiency, and providing essential financial guidance across the organization.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Reporting: Ensure all accounting treatment is recorded in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
• Statement Management: Maintain accurate and reliable financial statements for the Department.
• Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard financial integrity.
• Compliance Oversight: Conduct financial monitoring to ensure cost efficiency and adherence to state and federal regulations.
• Technical Guidance: Provide expert assistance to internal stakeholders regarding financial policies and procedures.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
• Experience: 1 year of related accounting experience.
• Skills: Governmental accounting principles, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting structures and accounting systems, advanced Excel proficiency.
