• Team: Works within the Finance Department and reports to the Assistant Director of Finance, Director of Finance, or other designated supervisor.
• Mission: This role ensures the integrity of the general ledger, accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and safeguarding of public resources for the City.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office applications, advanced Excel functions, financial accounting systems, reporting tools, new technology applications
What You’ll Actually Do
• Maintain Records: Prepare, review, and maintain accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, governmental practices, and City policies.
• Process Transactions: Prepare and post journal entries, review supporting documentation, research and correct discrepancies, and perform various account reconciliations.
• Report Finances: Participate in monthly and year-end closing activities, including accruals and account analysis, and prepare financial reports, analyses, and schedules for stakeholders.
• Support Operations: Assist with annual budget development, amendments, and monitoring, and provide professional accounting assistance and policy explanations to City departments.
• Ensure Compliance: Support external and internal audits by preparing schedules and compiling records, maintain confidentiality, and safeguard sensitive financial information.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field with substantial accounting coursework. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, with emphasis on municipal governmental accounting, fund accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.
• Experience: Minimum of up to two years of professional accounting, audit, budgeting, or financial analysis experience, progressing to at least five years of governmental accounting, budgeting, and financial control with two years of lead or supervisory responsibility for the Accountant III level.
• Skills: Ability to analyze complex financial information, identify errors, evaluate alternatives, and prepare accurate conclusions; ability to prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports; ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, contracts, and City policies; ability to communicate clearly and professionally, explaining technical financial information; ability to use Microsoft Office applications, advanced Excel, and financial accounting systems.
• Bonus: Municipal governmental accounting experience; progress toward CPA, CGFO, CPFO, or similar professional credential; lead or supervisory experience for higher levels; experience with municipal audits, financial statements, investments, debt, fixed assets, ERP systems, and process improvement.
