Accountant 1 | University of Miami

The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role at the University of Miami, located at the UHealth Medical Campus in Miami, Florida. UHealth is South Florida’s only university-based health system, dedicated to providing leading-edge patient care, groundbreaking research, and comprehensive medical education through the Miller School of Medicine. In this role, the Accountant 1 will oversee the Facilities department’s internal accounting and reporting functions, playing a critical part in managing fiscal operations and ensuring financial compliance.

What You’ll Actually Do
Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and analyze various financial reports, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and variance analyses, to assess accuracy, completeness, and adherence to reporting standards.
Fiscal Administration & Budget Management: Oversee and reconcile the department’s fiscal administration, including managing budgets, funding, contracts, and purchasing, while developing and analyzing periodic reports comparing budgeted versus actual costs.
Transaction Processing & Verification: Process, review, and approve a range of financial transactions such as invoices, reimbursements, check requisitions, and purchase orders, ensuring sufficient funds, accuracy, and proper accounting classifications.
Audit & Year-End Support: Contribute to fiscal year-end processes by preparing necessary accruals and supporting external audits by providing required documentation and addressing follow-up questions from auditors.
Strategic Financial Advising: Report on the department’s financial standing to management, offering insights and suggestions on resource utilization, tax strategies, and underlying assumptions for budget forecasts.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, providing foundational knowledge for an early career accounting professional.
• Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant accounting experience.
• Skills: Strong accounting skills, excellent Excel proficiency, clear written and verbal communication, ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively, and technical proficiency with office software and relevant applications.
• Bonus: Demonstrated learning agility to adapt to new procedures, technologies, and protocols, as well as changing priorities.
