As Maryland’s largest city and the 29th-most populous in the nation, Baltimore holds the unique distinction of being the United States’ largest independent city, established directly by the state’s constitution. It is exceptionally rich in history, featuring more public monuments per capita than any other U.S. city. Baltimore also leads the nation in historical preservation, with over 65,000 properties—approximately one-third of its buildings—listed on the National Register, including pioneering historic districts such as Fell’s Point, Federal Hill, and Mount Vernon Place.
