About the Job: Engineer Software Intern (Fall 2025)
This is a Part Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt internship position for Fall 2025, designated at an Intern level of experience (Requisition Number: 24125). Minimal travel is required (0-10%). The anticipated salary range for this role is $35,949.00 – $36,000.00, which is an estimate based on the role’s specifics; the actual offer considers factors like a candidate’s education, experience, and skills. The role requires the ability to obtain a Security Clearance.
As an Engineer Software Intern, you will directly support the Principal AI/ML Engineer. Your primary goal will be to advance space simulation and support AI development for the USSF customer. This involves collaborating with a cross-functional team of AI engineers, modeling and simulation engineers, product owners, and program managers.
Your core responsibility will be to support the development of artificial intelligence models that are integral to a larger pipeline and deliver value to the end customer. The job focuses on developing advanced AI to support space superiority analytics, multi-domain, joint service, and operations needs. These simulations will provide crucial support for:
• Force structure planning
• Joint Combatant Command analysis and operations support
• Space Force testing and training
• Research and development of space systems
Essential Job Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be expected to:
• Build software from source for different platforms using various compilers.
• Develop acceptance, integration, and unit tests for a variety of technologies.
• Develop new capabilities by leveraging existing libraries.
• Participate in software design meetings.
• Participate in code reviews.
• Perform issue backlog and board maintenance.
• Provide execution plan and status report inputs.
• Write user and developer documentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have:
• A High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Be working towards a Bachelor’s degree with between 20% and 40% of the required credits completed.
• Demonstrated interest in Space Operations.
• Solid Technical Writing Skills.
• A willingness to tackle difficult problems.
• A willingness to learn new languages (e.g., AFscript).
Preferred Requirements:
Ideal candidates will also possess:
• Knowledge in agent-based, event-driven simulators.
• Knowledge in at least one scripting language.
• Familiarity using Git, GitLab, JFrog Artifactory, Jira, and Confluence.
• A willingness to learn and provide insight into the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling (AFSIM), which is a C++ based modular object-oriented, multi-domain, multi-resolution modeling and simulation (M&S) framework for military simulations.
• Prior internship or work experience within the Air Force Research Laboratory.
