Job Description: TMHH Mentor (Teens Make Health Happen Mentor)
This role, known as a TMHH Mentor, is a near-peer mentorship opportunity focused on empowering the next generation of healthy leaders within the community.
Where You Fit In:
The TMHH Mentor is a creative, friendly, self-starter responsible for implementing an innovative wellness club called Teens Make Health Happen (TMHH) in 2-3 middle or high schools located in the greater Central/Southern Arizona area. The primary goal is to empower teens to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. Mentors serve as a catalyst for sustainable change, promoting improved health and wellness and fostering leadership opportunities for teens at their assigned sites.
Commitment:
This position requires a commitment of 8+ hours per week throughout the academic year. This includes being present at assigned school sites/campuses for 3-4 hours each week for instructional purposes. While full-year placements are prioritized, opportunities for single-semester commitments, as well as 1 or 3 club site placements, may be available.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):
• Develop Strong Relationships: Collaborate effectively with teen wellness leaders and site partners to ensure successful delivery of HealthCorps’ programming. This also involves working with the Regional Program Manager and other mentors, as well as participating in professional development opportunities provided by the organization.
• Assess Your Schools’ Needs and Progress: Research health inequities facing the schools, then measure impact by completing needs assessments, reporting, and tracking work throughout the mentorship.
• Manage Teens Make Health Happen Clubs: Plan and implement the successful delivery of the “Teens Make Health Happen” program.
• Share and Make Aware: Host monthly “Café O Yea” demonstrations at each site and support regional events. Contribute to HealthCorps’ social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) by sharing program highlights, stories of impact, and photos.
• Commit to the HealthCorps Mission: Prioritize health and wellness daily, ensuring relevant, local health resources are accessible to all students and staff at respective sites. The role aims to leave a lasting, positive impact on the community.
• Represent HealthCorps in Central/Southern Arizona: Serve as an embodiment and extension of HealthCorps’ organization and values, both within and outside the assigned sites, assisting in outreach efforts that connect teens, staff, and community members to HealthCorps resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently an undergraduate or graduate college student majoring in, or interested in, public health, public policy, biology, nutrition, marketing, psychology, education, social work, or other related fields.
• In good academic standing with the university.
• A commitment of 8+ hours each week to the mentorship for the entire academic year.
• A strong self-expectation and desire to grow personally and professionally as a leader in the community, and as a speaker comfortable learning and presenting on health-related topics to a teen audience.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to travel to assigned sites, which may include distances of up to 40 miles within the Central/Southern Arizona area.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
What You’ll Gain (Benefits):
• College Credit: HealthCorps will collaborate with the university to facilitate college or course credit, or practicum hours, depending on specific university requirements.
• Professional Development: Ongoing training, professional development, and mentorship throughout the program. Direct experience in public health and the education system, with opportunities to network with community leaders.
• Stipend: A stipend is provided based on the number of sites served, distributed in monthly installments. This stipend is intended to help alleviate potential costs incurred from participation (e.g., bus passes, gas, professional clothing, parking, meals while serving).
Additional Position Details:
The mentorship offer is contingent upon a clearance of a background investigation and/or reference check.
