This is a fully remote, unpaid MSW field placement opportunity specifically available only for students from the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work. The intern will support the Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) program in the United States, which operates through 29 offices. RAI-US delivers vital services such as initial resettlement, mental health, employment, ESL, immigration services, and support for survivors of crime and human trafficking. The role emphasizes the increasing importance of private resource development, supporter engagement, and volunteer contributions in sustaining these services.

The internship is with the Resource, Acquisition, and Management (RAM) team, based in RAI-HQ. The RAM team supports development and volunteer operations staff across all U.S. offices by building systems and strategies for efficient and compliant leveraging of private resources. The intern will play a critical systems-support role, aiming to alleviate pressures on U.S. offices and contribute to responsive strategies for staff, volunteers, and donors.

The position offers a flexible schedule and requires navigation of various digital platforms and communication with staff, volunteers, and community members nationwide. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about detailing external communications, platforms, and databases, creating training/resources, and engaging warmly with stakeholders. Successful interns can prioritize, work independently on detail-oriented tasks, and proactively communicate updates and questions.

Major Responsibilities (may be refined based on student interest):

1. Instructional Design and Knowledge Management:
• Receive training on instructional design/adult learning principles.
• Identify knowledge gaps and create/update training content on Kaya and RescueNet for Volunteer and Donor Engagement and Operations.
• Design and deliver info sessions and trainings to staff and volunteers, including recordings and animated videos.
• Topics may include: Volunteering/Interning with IRC, Pathways to Support IRC, general orientation (expectations & policies for volunteers/interns), department-specific orientations, and onboarding staff for volunteer/intern engagement across platforms.

2. Human-Centered Systems Support:
• Monitor and engage in database improvement projects, potentially involving research, data collection/analysis/visualization, surveys, and focus groups.
• Work with databases such as Salesforce (Relationship Management), Golden (Volunteer Engagement), and Integra (federal cost-share reporting).
• Connect with staff across 29 RAI offices, HQ, and prospective/onboarded volunteers and donors.
• Contribute to data-informed strategies and campaigns.
• Monitor data dashboards across Salesforce, Golden, and Integra; synthesize trends and strategize improvements.
• Help establish processes for sustainable data monitoring and reporting, including creating regular data insights communication.
• Opportunity to conduct interviews with IRC volunteers/interns, write stories for local office webpages (RescueX/Drupal), and design social media content (Facebook).
• Develop surveys (Microsoft Forms) or other evaluation strategies for system/process improvement.

3. Safeguarding and Compliance:
• Work on cross-functional projects aimed at improving safeguarding and compliance for RAI offices.

Field Placement Projects Could Include:
• Strengthening processes for partnership between resettlement agencies and universities.
• Gathering and synthesizing resources related to federal match/cost-share into a user-friendly guide.
• Open to aligning student interests and strengths with opportunities within the scope of services.

Learning Objectives:
• Learn best practices in volunteer and community engagement for refugee and immigrant communities.
• Receive training and exposure to organizational platforms for volunteer engagement and supporter cultivation.
• Learn IRC’s brand and messaging, gaining experience in creating branded templates and content.
• Develop skills in instructional design/adult learning principles.
• Develop skills in social media/web content and marketing.
• Develop skills in data monitoring & visualization for data-informed training/systems/processes.
• Gain insight into IRC RAI-US 29 offices and contribute to national-level staff/volunteer/donor support services.

Requirements:
• Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident and authorized to work in the U.S.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
Alignment with UMSSW placement term: 1-year field placement with a Fall or Winter start desired, or GASP.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:
• Clear, compassionate communicator demonstrating collaboration and valuing diverse skills/perspectives.
• Digitally savvy, innovative problem-solver with proven success working independently.
• Curious, flexible systems-thinker.
• Experience working with volunteers and donors.
• Social media and graphic design experience with Canva is a plus.
• Fluent in English (spoken and written).
• Critical attention to detail and accuracy.
• Interview and story writing experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and learn digital tools.

Working Environment:
Fully remote.
• Intern must use their own laptop/equipment.
• Intern must have an effective workspace for scheduled service hours.
