About the Job: LPN SNE (Student Nurse)

This position, titled LPN SNE (Student Nurse), is for individuals currently enrolled in a nursing program. It offers a structured opportunity to gain direct patient care experience under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or other designated healthcare professional.

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
The Student Nurse provides direct patient care, strictly adhering to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the policies, procedures, and guidelines established by Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions:
The Student Nurse’s responsibilities are carried out under the direct supervision of an RN and involve supporting the nursing process. Key functions include:

Support for Nursing Process: Assists the RN in the application of the nursing process.
Skill Development: Collaborates with the RN to develop critical thinking skills and ensure high-quality patient care.
Learning Orientation: Actively seeks out educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
Basic Patient Care: Provides fundamental patient care, including but not limited to:
• Care and comfort.
• Recording vital signs.
• Assisting with personal care and hygiene.
• Aiding with patient mobility.
• Performing unit-based specialty duties as delegated.
Communication & Liaison: Acts as a liaison between the patient and the nurse, reporting any changes or concerns to the nurse promptly.
Customer Service: Delivers high-level customer service to all patients, their families, visitors, and all employees.
Documentation: Provides accurate, precise, and timely documentation relevant to patient care when applicable.
Hand-off/Reporting: Participates in hand-off/report sessions, sharing pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and when leaving.
Delegated Tasks: Performs delegated tasks only after competency has been officially validated.

Education Requirements:

Required: High School Diploma or GED.
Required: Current enrollment in a nursing program with completion of at least one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation.

Certifications:

Preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS).

Training:

Required: Must have completed the first clinical rotation as a nursing student.
Preferred: EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training.

Work Experience:

Preferred: Recent experience in an acute care and/or long-term care facility.

Working Conditions:
The role involves dynamic and potentially challenging working conditions common in a healthcare environment:

• Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
• Potential exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
• May be required to use physical restraints.
• Possible exposure to adverse weather conditions (cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.) when traveling.

Patient Population:
The Student Nurse must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to a diverse patient population, understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan. This includes the ability to assess patient status, interpret information, and provide care tailored to specific age-related needs as per departmental policies. Patient age groups served include:

• Neonates (0-4 weeks)
• Infants (1-12 months)
• Pediatrics (1-12 years)
• Adolescents (13-17 years)
• Adults (18-64 years)
• Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Physical Requirements:
The role requires significant physical stamina and capability:

• Lifting/Carrying (0-50 lbs.): 34-66% of the time.
• Lifting/Carrying (50-100 lbs.): 67-100% of the time.
• Push/Pull (0-50 lbs.): 34-66% of the time.
• Push/Pull (50-100 lbs.): 34-66% of the time.

Additional Physical Requirements include:
Manual dexterity (eye/hand coordination), performing shift work, maneuvering patient weight, hearing alarms/telephone/audio recorder, reaching above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity, color vision, acuity (far/near), depth perception, use of latex products, and exposure to various environmental elements (toxic/caustic/chemicals/detergents, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, gaseous risk exposure).

Patient Data Management: Proficiency in patient data collection and documentation (e.g., vital signs, intake/output, changes in patient condition).
Basic Patient Care: Competence in basic hygiene and activities of daily living care, assisting with feeding, hydration, nutrition, bowel and bladder elimination, ambulation, and patient mobility.
Clinical Technology: Use of clinical technology.
Compassion: A compassionate, relationship-based approach in care activities.
