Job Description:

The Student Intern position offers an opportunity to support data and/or clinical research under direct supervision. The intern will work with various staff and departments within the School of Medicine and Medical Center, including Directors, Managers, Clinical Information Systems, Research Nursing, and Regulatory Services. There may also be interaction with patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Collection and Management:
• Collect patient information using established methodologies.
• Gather and compile data, statistics, and other necessary materials.
• Input clinical and non-clinical data into databases and/or case report forms.
• Extract data for publications or collect data from external physician offices.
• Perform literature searches and retrieve reference materials from various sources.
Patient Interaction:
• Complete assessments on study subjects/patients per protocol (with proper training).
• Follow through with items and patients as part of the research study.
• Take vital signs (if properly trained).
• Maintain regular contact with patients, encouraging visit reminders and research compliance.
• Ensure interactions with patients and their families are courteous, effective, professional, and cooperative.
Sample Handling and Coordination:
• Collect blood for biomarker analysis.
• Coordinate neuropsychological testing and PET/MR imaging.
• Organize and manage data.
• Gather, properly package, store, and transfer slides, samples, and other important materials.
• Coordinate the shipment and transfer of materials among departments and labs.
Regulatory Compliance and Auditing:
• Act as an internal auditor during quarterly internal audits for other studies.
• Stay aware of the study’s regulatory status and maintain up-to-date regulatory documents.
• Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures, including IRB and other approvals.
• Ensure protocol compliance, following standard steps for eligibility criteria, follow-up processes, and documentation.
Recruitment and Screening:
• Recruit and screen potential patients/subjects for study eligibility.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
• Compile data and assist in consolidating and analyzing it for presentation to sponsoring and regulatory agencies.
• Review data with the supervisor and provide reports to all parties (e.g., data and safety monitoring committee, the principal investigator, sponsoring agency, etc.) on study progress.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Work with the Principal Investigator on FDA/IND amendments and continuations for active studies.
• Work with the Principal Investigator on NIH reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be a full-time student, or if working in the summer months (Mid-May through Mid-Sept), must be planning to return to full-time status in the fall.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree plus one-year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Computer literate with good interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
