This internship is designed to equip recent veterinary graduates with the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in veterinary medicine.

Key Highlights:

Comprehensive Training: Six-week orientation with 25+ hours of continuing education.
Diverse Caseload: Exposure to general practice, emergency cases, surgery, and hospitalized patient management.
Mentorship: Monthly meetings with an assigned mentor, along with weekly topic rounds and occasional wet labs.
Surgical Experience: Opportunities to assist in and perform various emergent procedures, including exploratory laparotomies, splenectomies, and cystotomies.
Shelter Medicine Exposure: Optional six-month rotation with a nearby animal rescue center, performing high-volume spay-neuter surgeries.
Professional Development: Participation in quarterly check-ins and biannual reviews to monitor progress and provide feedback.
Supportive Environment: Encouragement to take ownership of cases with guidance from experienced staff doctors.

The program begins with a six-week orientation, introducing you to all hospital areas and equipment, supplemented by over 25 hours of continuing education on relevant topics. Following orientation, interns work 15 shifts per month, managing a diverse caseload that includes urgent care, true emergencies, hospitalized patients, and general practice appointments.

Hybrid Internship (Optional): For those interested in shelter and rescue work, the hospital offers a joint program with a nearby rescue center. This hybrid internship allows you to spend six months at the hospital focusing on general practice, emergency, and surgery, and six months at the rescue, performing over 600 surgeries under the direct mentorship of a specialty-trained high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter surgeon.

About You:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
• Virginia state veterinary board license (or ability to obtain)
• Strong interest in general practice, emergency medicine, and surgery.
• Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to engage with a diverse caseload and flexible scheduling.
