Job Description:

This is a Juvenile Supervision Officer position at Bell County Juvenile Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Fulfilling duties related to the assignment as directed by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the United States Department of Justice including PREA, Texas Family Code, Bell County Employee Handbook, and Bell County Juvenile Services policies and procedures.
• Working with a diverse population.
• Conducting searches of persons and facilities to control contraband.
• Maintaining appearance and appropriate professional behavior.
• Providing shift coverage as scheduled AND on an On-Call basis.
• Addressing behavioral issues of residents to ensure compliance and foster a positive environment.
• Assisting staff during situations requiring physical restraint/behavior modification (Handle with Care) and the department approved behavior management program.
• Working a schedule that involves weekends, evenings, or nights (shift work).
• Supervising residents in program activities (meals, showers, school, recreation, visitation).
• Performing housekeeping tasks to maintain facility cleanliness.
• Maintaining daily activity logs and reports.
• Writing discipline and incident reports.
• Notifying the immediate supervisor at least two hours prior to the shift if calling in sick.
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must have no disqualifying criminal history.
• Must have no criminal history as described in § 344.410(a) unless TJJD has reviewed it and determined the person is not ineligible for certification due to the criminal history.
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent as specified in TAC § 344.204.
• Must never have had any type of certification revoked by TJJD.
• Must complete the training required by TAC § 344.
• Must pass the certification exam.

Other Qualifications:

• Regular attendance is essential.
• Must be able to work well with others.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat.
• Must be able to effectively use computer software and data systems.
• Must pass required background checks.

Physical Demands:

• Must possess the physical stamina to address potentially hostile or physically aggressive clients and/or assist staff during situations requiring the use of Handle with Care.
• Potential for driving long distances.
• Mostly indoor work with some outdoor work.
• Involves light to medium work, walking or standing, and exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):

• Exposure to potentially hostile or physically aggressive youth.
• Face-to-face contact with diverse populations.
• Exposure to bright/dim light, dusts, and pollen.
• Potential for extreme noise levels.
• Shift work.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
• Requires Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification (to be obtained after employment).
• Requires CPR/First Aid Certification (to be obtained after employment).
• Requires Handle with Care Certification (to be obtained after employment).
