Job Description:

Summary:

The Pharmacy Intern position at Queens Hospital Center offers practical experience in a hospital pharmacy setting. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the intern will assist in medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management, while adhering to all relevant laws and regulations. This role involves rotating between different areas of the pharmacy and various shifts to meet departmental needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Rotating assignments and tours to meet departmental needs under pharmacist supervision.
• Performing work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods.
• Communicating effectively (orally and in writing).
• Participating in reporting adverse drug reactions and drug usage evaluations.
• Receiving, returning, and delivering medications, medication and anesthesia trays, and supplies to various hospital areas.
• Operating equipment properly and troubleshooting automated dispensing systems as needed.
• Prepackaging medications in appropriate containers for dispensing.
• Preparing non-patient specific batches of IV solutions in accordance with USP guidelines and procedures.
• Compounding sterile and non-sterile products in accordance with USP guidelines and procedures.
• Conducting nursing unit, outpatient clinic, and pharmacy area inspections; assisting with institutional and departmental regulatory surveys as needed.
• Receiving prescriptions, typing prescription labels, and affixing labels on containers.
• Keying in and retrieving prescription data for review by a pharmacist.
• Utilizing outpatient and inpatient computerized systems to enter and access patient care information.
• Receiving and charging out medications from the stock room, including stocking shelves and rotating stock.
• Maintaining and retrieving pharmacy records using automated and/or manual systems.
• Obtaining drugs from stock and returning them to stock.
• Performing pharmacy-related clerical tasks.
• Filling, retrieving, and distributing mediation code boxes and anesthesia trays throughout the hospital.
• Performing related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduates and undergraduates of a College of Pharmacy in the United States shall be required to secure a New York State Pharmacy Intern Permit before being eligible as an Intern.
• A minimum of six months of supervised training is requested for admission to the full Pharmacist licensing examination. The six months may be completed in accordance with the following:
• Up to three months in each of the summers preceding the final and the next to final years of a professional curriculum in Pharmacy.
• Any portion or all of the internship may be completed subsequent to graduation from a registered program in Pharmacy, or its equivalent.
• Graduates from a College of Pharmacy in a foreign country shall be required to secure a New York State Pharmacy Intern Permit before being eligible as an Intern. A minimum of one year of supervised training is required for admission to the full pharmacist licensing examination.
