South Shore Equine Clinic offers both a 6-month and a 12-month internship program designed for graduates of AVMA-accredited veterinary schools who are eligible for a Massachusetts veterinary license.
Goal of Internship: The primary goal is to equip the intern with the skills and knowledge necessary to function as a qualified ambulatory associate veterinarian and a proficient diagnostician, well-versed in various diagnostic techniques and treatment options.
Internship Start Dates:
• 6-month internship: Starts in January
• 12-month internship: Starts in June
Early Season Focus (January – April): This period heavily involves reproduction, foaling, and early spring wellness appointments, in addition to the typical schedule.
Case Load Details:
• Performance Horse Evaluations (40%): Emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutic options for horses involved in various disciplines, including hunter/jumper, eventing, dressage, Standardbred racing, and Western pleasure.
• Lameness Work-ups: Comprehensive lameness investigations utilizing advanced imaging techniques (Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, MRI). Therapeutic modalities include shockwave therapy, Tenex procedures, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein), Arthramid, and conventional intra-articular treatments.
• Preventative Care/Internal Medicine (30%): Includes referrals as well as ophthalmic and medical colic cases. Routine preventative care and dentistry are also significant components. Note: Colic surgery is *not• performed at this clinic.
• General Ambulatory (20%): Routine ambulatory calls and emergencies seen weekly.
• Reproductive (Seasonal) (5-10%): Reproductive cases occur predominantly in the spring.
• Emergency (No Colic Surgery) (5%): Emergency cases managed as needed.
Types of Cases Breakdown:
• 40% Performance horse evaluations
• 30% Preventative care/internal medicine
• 20% General ambulatory
• 5-10% Reproductive (seasonal)
• 5% Emergency (no colic surgery)
Estimated Workload Distribution:
• 3-week rotations, cycling through Ambulatory, Hospital, and Emergency duties.
• Monday, Wednesday & Friday: Full days dedicated to ambulatory practice, encompassing routine preventative care and lameness/purchase examinations.
• Tuesday/Thursday: Morning in-clinic cases and surgeries; afternoon ambulatory duties.
• Saturday: Morning in-clinic caseload and weekend ambulatory treatments.
Emergency Duty Requirements:
• Shared on-call rotation, including nights and weekends, with backup support available.
Supervision Level:
• Initially, the intern receives heavy mentorship and supervision. This gradually transitions to greater independence in handling emergencies and certain daily tasks and procedures, eventually leading to independent days of scheduled appointments.
Prerequisites:
• Graduate from AVMA accredited school
• Passed NAVLE
• Eligible for a MA vet license
• Valid driver’s license
