Job Description:
This internship opportunity is designed for senior nursing students in their final semester of nursing school to complete their required clinical hours for graduation at Sheppard Pratt’s inpatient units.
Key Responsibilities:
• Work directly with a pre-selected BSN-prepared preceptor on assigned inpatient units.
• Gain comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles and practices.
• Develop skills in therapeutic communication techniques.
• Participate in and learn to facilitate therapeutic groups.
• Understand the use and effects of common psychiatric medications.
• Master verbal de-escalation techniques to manage patient crises.
• Enhance skills in patient engagement strategies.
• Learn and contribute to milieu management within the inpatient setting.
• Direct patient interaction/care.
• Assist in running a group.
• Learn team collaboration.
• Receive 1:1 feedback from the preceptor.
• Flexible thinking and adaptability.
• Readiness to learn from all experiences.
• Patience and compassion when working with this challenging patient population.
Timeframe:
• The practicum is semester-based.
• Hours and dates will vary according to the school’s requirements.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Must be a senior-level nursing student in the last semester of nursing school.
• Must complete an in-person onboarding process through Human Resources at Sheppard Pratt.
• Sheppard Pratt must have a current affiliation agreement with the student’s nursing school.
• Student must submit a current transcript with the application.
• A program description, which includes practicum hours and student expectations, must be provided.
Learning Model:
• Students will receive 1:1 supervision from their assigned preceptor.
• The preceptor will select opportunities for observation, return demonstration, and verbal comprehension.
Student Expectations:
• Engage in direct patient interaction and care.
• Assist in running groups for patients.
• Learn how to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
• Receive individualized feedback from your preceptor.
• Demonstrate flexible thinking and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
• Show a readiness to learn from all experiences, both positive and challenging.
• Exhibit patience and compassion when working with a complex patient population.
Student Tasks:
• Perform all tasks of a psychiatric nurse.
• Medication administration and hands-on interventions for behavioral dyscontrol is excluded.
