Job Description:

This is a Firefighter Trainee position within the Killeen Fire Department. The primary focus is on training to acquire the skills necessary for protecting life and property. This includes firefighting, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials handling, and fire prevention.

Essential Duties: The trainee will receive extensive training in various areas:

Firefighting Activities: Driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and equipment, hose laying, fire suppression and containment.
Emergency Medical Aid: Rescue operations, administering emergency medical aid, and providing other necessary assistance.
Training and Development: Participation in fire drills and classes covering firefighting, rescue, emergency medical techniques, hazardous materials, and related topics.
Equipment and Facilities Maintenance: Maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; performing minor repairs.
Fire Prevention: Participating in building and hydrant inspections.
General Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining fire stations, grounds, and equipment.
Salvage Operations: Performing salvage operations such as covering property, removing debris, and other tasks as needed.
Other Duties: Completing various training assignments for advancement to Fire & Rescue Officer/EMT.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Age: 18 years old but not yet 36 by the date of hire.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read and write English and meet City of Killeen Civil Service requirements.
• Residency: Maintain residence within a 45-minute drive of the City’s Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (EJT).
• Valid Texas Driver’s License by hire date; obtain Class B Texas Driver’s License within 15 days of hire or completion of the Fire and EMT Academy.
• Meet City of Killeen requirements for driving a city vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not required, preference may be given to candidates possessing:

• Structural Firefighter Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
• Licensed/Certified EMT – Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
