Job Description:

This Research Internship at Microsoft offers a 12-week program for PhD students (or those accepted into a PhD program) in CS, EE, or related STEM fields. The internship focuses on improving Microsoft 365 Copilot, a groundbreaking productivity tool leveraging large language models. Interns will contribute to research and development efforts alongside experienced researchers.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct research and contribute to advancements in AI/ML/foundation models within the context of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
• Work on projects related to fine-tuning, multimodal models, agents, and/or business processes.
• Collaborate with mentors and other researchers, presenting findings and contributing to the research community.
• Apply theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world AI challenges.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of large language models and foundation models used in Copilot.

Qualifications:

Required:
• Accepted into or currently enrolled in a PhD program in CS, EE, or a related STEM field.
• At least 1 year of experience in research, peer-reviewed publications, and software development.
• At least 1 year of experience with foundation models, large language models, RL, or other AI topics.
• Physical presence at the manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the internship duration.
• Submission of at least two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work/research samples.

Preferred:
• Ability to think unconventionally and generate innovative solutions.
• Active research in foundation models, large language models, or computer vision models.
• Effective collaboration skills with mentors and other researchers.
• Proficient interpersonal skills and cross-cultural collaboration abilities.

Compensation: The base pay range is USD $6,550 – $12,880 per month, with a higher range (USD $8,480 – $13,920 per month) for specific locations within the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan areas. Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits.
