Job Description: Bartley Fellowships – Summer Internships at The Wall Street Journal Opinion Section

The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion section is seeking highly motivated students (juniors, seniors, or recent graduates within one year of graduation) for 10-week paid summer internships in their New York City office. These internships, formally known as the Bartley Fellowships, are named in honor of Robert L. (Bob) Bartley, the section’s former editor.

Responsibilities:

Interns will gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced opinion writers and editors. They will be assigned to a department within the Opinion section: Features (Op-Eds and Columns); Arts in Review; Book Reviews; or Social Media. Specific tasks include:

• Assisting in research, writing, and editing content for print and digital editions of the Journal.
• Contributing to social media and digital production tasks.
• Submitting original article or project ideas to editors across the Opinion section.

Qualifications:

• Direct experience writing and ideally editing in a journalism context is essential.
• Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet daily deadlines.
• Familiarity with technology relevant to journalism.
• Social media experience with a publication or brand is a plus.
• Familiarity with The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page philosophy is highly desirable (discounted student subscriptions are available).
• While students from any discipline may apply, those concentrating in Journalism, Communications, Economics, Political Science, International Studies, History, Foreign Language, Statistics, Finance, Pre-Law, Science, Business, Marketing, Religious Studies, or Philosophy are particularly encouraged. Students from other disciplines should explain in their cover letter why their field of study would be beneficial.
• Must be a U.S. citizen, or hold a green card or visa permitting work in the U.S.

• A cover letter
• A résumé
• Links to or cited full text of three best writing samples
• A response (no more than 600 words) to one of the following prompts:
• Write an editorial consistent with the WSJ’s philosophy in response to a current event.
• Defend your most controversial opinion in an editorial.
• Write a letter to the editor responding to a recent WSJ piece.
• Compare and contrast two opposing arguments on a single topic from reliable sources.
• Submit an original investigative Op-Ed or opinion piece suitable for publication in the Journal.
