Job Description: Transportation Planning Intern

AECOM is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern for their Oakland, CA office, starting in May 2025. This internship offers hands-on experience complementing academic learning and facilitating a smooth transition into a professional career. While primarily focused on the Transit-Rail team, the internship provides diverse learning opportunities. The intern may work on various multi-modal transit planning aspects, such as light rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail, bus rapid transit, microtransit, and related studies.

Responsibilities:

• Supporting planning studies and reports for new and updated plans and programs.
• Gathering statistical data and creating reports and maps using data sources such as census information, land use data, roadway networks, crash records, and asset inventories.
• Collaborating with the planning team on equitable public outreach, including material and presentation preparation.
• Analyzing data and producing detailed maps for thematic maps and reports.
• Conducting concept-level evaluations of transit/transportation improvement options.
• Documenting and presenting findings on transit/transportation planning projects.
• Researching current transportation-related topics at local, state, and federal levels.
• Assisting senior staff and/or Project Managers with other assigned duties.
• Participating in planning and project development activities for transportation projects under the supervision of senior staff.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements: Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Planning, Political Science, GIS, Data Analytics, or Urban Studies. Must have completed at least one year of study and have some coursework or work experience in transportation. Recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree planning to pursue a Master’s degree are also eligible. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree program in the most recent school term.

Preferred Qualifications: Currently pursuing a master’s degree in urban planning, transportation planning, or city and regional planning (with an undergraduate degree in a relevant field). Previous internship experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
