Job Description: Communications Intern – Climate, Economics, and Finance Program
This is a full-time, 6-month internship (flexible start and end dates) at WRI’s Washington, D.C. office. It’s a hybrid position requiring at least 8 days of in-office work per month. Existing work authorization and residency in DC, Maryland, or Virginia are required; WRI does not sponsor visas for this role.
The intern will play a crucial role in developing and executing communications strategies for WRI’s Climate, Economics, and Finance Program. The position focuses on supporting bold climate action globally, particularly through UN climate negotiations (COP30).
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute communications campaigns: Urging ambitious climate targets from countries, establishing expectations for international climate finance scaling, and advancing a robust adaptation agenda at COP30.
• Create communications materials: Draft messaging, social media content, articles, presentations, email marketing materials, and other promotional content related to research and knowledge products.
• Manage online presence: Contribute to maintaining and updating program website content.
• Collaborate with teams: Work with program, research, and communications teams to promote thought leadership and engagement opportunities for the Climate, Economics, and Finance Program.
• Support high-level events: Assist with planning and execution of events and speaking engagements aligned with program priorities.
• Assist with media engagement: Coordinate with communications colleagues on media outreach.
• Support COP30 outreach: Contribute to the program’s communication strategy leading up to and during the UN climate summit.
• Integrate equity considerations: Equity is a core aspect of the role and will be integrated into all responsibilities.
Required Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree (master’s preferred) in communications, climate/international policy, journalism, or a related field.
• Strong interest in climate policy and related international environmental and development issues.
• Excellent research, writing, editing, and digital communication skills.
• Ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
• Comfortable collaborating with colleagues globally.
Compensation: $20/hour (undergraduates), $22/hour (graduates), $24/hour (PhD students).
