About Codman Square Health Center:

Codman Square Health Center is addressing workforce shortages and racial disparities in HIV/STI/HCV prevention and treatment by offering its inaugural medical student internship in Summer 2024. The program aims to provide valuable experience in primary care and HIV/STI/HCV care within community health centers and academic medical centers.

Job Description: Medical Student Internship (Summer 2024)

This internship program offers two HBCU medical students from underrepresented minority groups the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a critical area of healthcare. The program runs from May 20th to June 28th, 2024 (with flexible start dates considered). A $6,000 stipend is provided.

Key Program Elements:

Clinical Rotations: Interns will shadow clinicians at Codman Square Health Center and Boston University Medical Center’s Infectious Disease Clinic, focusing on primary care, HIV, sexual health, and substance use disorders.
Community Engagement: Visits to local STI clinics and HIV community-based organizations like the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Boston Public Health Commission are included.
Quality Improvement Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, interns will develop and present a quality improvement project related to HIV, sexual health, or LGBTQ+ health. Prior research and project idea development are recommended.
Didactic Training: The program incorporates didactic sessions on HIV/STI/HCV, healthcare inequities, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications:

Eligibility: Applicants must be underrepresented minority HBCU medical students with a demonstrated commitment to serving medically underserved communities. Underrepresented racial/ethnic groups include African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Southeast Asian.
Application Requirements: A completed application including two essays (see below) is required.
Essay 1: A statement outlining interest in sexual health, reproductive health, HIV care management, health education, and/or LGBTQ+ health (500 words max).
Essay 2: A discussion of experiences working with or being part of a medically underserved population, and how these experiences have shaped the applicant’s educational path, professional aspirations, and decision to apply (500 words max).
