Job Description: Engineering Intern (Signal Department)

This is a paid, full-time (40 hours/week) summer internship (June 9, 2025 – August 1, 2025), with two positions available, offering a monthly salary of $4,875. The internship is located in Kansas City, KS, but requires travel up to 75% of the time within the BNSF operating system (potentially requiring relocation within the western 28 states). Reliable transportation is mandatory. The internship is in a 24/7 operational environment, potentially involving on-call duties, overtime, nights, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities:

• Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct signal infrastructure (wayside signals, highway grade crossings, signal bungalows).
• Plan and schedule maintenance and repairs, verifying work quality.
• Expand and update BNSF infrastructure, overseeing projects involving BNSF property (terminal/hub expansion, central lines, facilities, structure repair/replacement, public projects, utility crossings).
• Ensure team safety.
• Manage project finances and schedules, communicating with stakeholders.
• Shadow various signal roles (Supervisor, Construction Supervisor, Maintainer, Manager, Director) to gain practical experience.

Work Environment:

The internship involves indoor/outdoor work in a safety-sensitive environment with variable and potentially extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, sleet). Work may involve uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Training:

The internship begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, providing a company overview and networking opportunities. Ongoing support, project assignments, and field training will follow at an assigned location.

Goal:

The internship aims to identify candidates for BNSF’s Management Trainee Program, providing a direct path to a post-graduation career with the company.

Qualifications:

Basic: Legally authorized to work in the U.S. (no sponsorship required), 18+ years old upon hire, ability to work in a 24/7 environment including nights, weekends, and holidays, capable of performing outdoor duties in all weather conditions, ability to climb ladders and navigate uneven terrain, willingness to travel up to 75% and relocate anywhere within the BNSF operating system for the summer, reliable transportation, pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, etc.), Construction Management, Business, or a related field from an accredited university, minimum 2.75 GPA, less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships).
Preferred: Prior internship or related work experience (less than 3 years), leadership experience in campus/community/extracurricular organizations.
