Job Description: Communications & Public Involvement Intern
WSP’s Advisory & Planning Team seeks a Communications & Public Involvement Intern for their San Francisco, CA or Los Angeles, CA office. This is a 12-week summer internship (starting May 19, 2025, with flexible start date) within their Summer Internship Program, open to undergraduate or graduate students.
Responsibilities:
• Support various public and stakeholder engagement tasks, developing technical, social, and ethical skills.
• Learn community engagement and effective communication principles.
• Create communication materials (presentations, fact sheets, infographics, videos, web updates, etc.) to inform the public and stakeholders.
• Support the communications team in executing and monitoring public information and communication plans, including media buys and social media strategies.
• Assist a project team in all communications and outreach efforts (attending public events, documenting meetings, coordinating with technical teams, implementing social media plans, and communicating with stakeholders).
• Support engagement strategies for all communities, especially underserved populations, using various tools (workshops, meetings, market research, campaigns, visuals).
• Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
• Complete assigned training.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.
• Perform additional duties as needed.
Required Qualifications:
• Active enrollment in an accredited Communications, Public Health, Urban Planning, Journalism, Public Affairs, Government Relations, or related undergraduate program (graduation August 2025 or later).
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Demonstrated interest in public/stakeholder engagement.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral). Experience writing for multiple audiences and presenting technical concepts clearly.
• Discretion and diplomacy in interacting with diverse community members.
• Ability to follow direction from leadership and mentors.
• Basic proficiency in technical writing, office automation software, and technology.
• Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s policies.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Enrollment in a Masters or PhD program in a related field (graduation August 2025 or later).
• Experience with Microsoft Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Prior internship and campus leadership experience.
Compensation: $19.57 – $30.53 per hour (Note: This is a compensation range, and the actual offer may vary based on experience and location). No relocation or housing assistance is provided.
