Job Description: Mining Engineer Internship 2025
This internship is offered within Cargill’s Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit, specifically at their underground salt mine locations in either Lansing, NY, or Cleveland, OH. The 12-week summer internship (May/June – August 2025) provides practical experience in operations leadership and/or maintenance & reliability engineering.
Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:
Interns will gain experience in various aspects of the mining industry, including:
• Mining Engineers: Working both underground and on the surface, interns will learn mining techniques such as surveying and mapping, room and pillar mining operations, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and mining safety best practices. They will collaborate on engineering projects and lead their own initiatives.
• Electrical Engineers: Interns will gain exposure to high-voltage power infrastructure and control systems, learning to safely operate and automate equipment. They will work on electrical reliability, a critical aspect of production and communication in the underground environment. This includes working with electric-powered mining equipment, hoisting systems, pumps, conveyor belts, and screening equipment.
• Production Management Engineers: This involves leading people, processes, and product flow. Responsibilities include direct supervision of operators, participation in daily production meetings, understanding and adhering to MSHA regulations (environmental, health, safety, maintenance, and housekeeping), team development, and process optimization.
• Process/Project Engineering: This includes involvement in business case development, vendor selection, budget management, project management for major improvements, process optimization, safety, quality, infrastructure, and energy use. Interns will work with innovation processes, idea generation, and reliability-centered design, implementing technical initiatives from global groups.

Compensation and Benefits:
• hourly rate: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour (depending on graduation date and full-time employment eligibility).

Required Qualifications:
• Ability to work in an underground environment.
• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or a related engineering discipline.
• Degree completion between December 2025 and May 2028.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. (not based on a student visa or third-party employer sponsorship).
• Geographic flexibility and willingness to relocate to Cleveland, OH, or Lansing, NY.
• Ability to complete a 12-week internship in Summer 2025.
• High degree of initiative and resourcefulness.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Sophomore, junior, or senior in an accredited engineering program.
• Mining or heavy industrial co-op or internship experience.
• 2.7 GPA or higher.
• Ability to apply technical knowledge to job duties.
• Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
• Leadership experience.
Physical Demands: The job involves physical activity, including bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Exposure to heat, cold, and salt dust may occur.
