Detailed Job Description:
The City of Boulder’s Enterprise Data Team is seeking intern data analysis interns to learn how to deliver analysis projects across the full range of the City of Boulder’s departments and activities. Interns will bring skills in analysis, communication, and interpretation of data, and will learn to support a culture of innovation, efficiency, and data-informed decision-making. The ideal candidate can deliver high-quality work across multiple complex policy and operational projects and is interested in using data to improve local government.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Learning opportunities include:
• Using appropriate tools and methods (e.g., SQL, R) to prepare and analyze different types of operational and survey data.
• Creating clear, effective, and compelling data visualizations and drafted reports to communicate analysis results to stakeholders with varying data literacy levels.
• Using appropriate data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., R, Power BI, Tableau) to explore data sets and identify relevant facts, patterns, and trends.
• Designing and drafting documentation, guidance, and policy materials related to the use of data.
• Under the supervision of members of the Enterprise Data Team, managing and delivering one or more analytic projects from scoping to implementation.
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Ability to create clear, effective, and compelling data visualizations and drafted reports to communicate analysis results to stakeholders with varying data literacy levels.
• Knowledge and competency in one or more scripting languages for analysis (such as R, Python, Stata, SPSS).
• Knowledge and familiarity with core statistical concepts and techniques, such as bias, variance, sampling, and regression.
• Skill in excellent attention to detail.
• Skilled in strong verbal and written communication, with the ability to interact with colleagues and clients in a positive and cooperative manner.
Preferred Requirements:
• Knowledge and competency in R
• Knowledge and competency in SQL
• Knowledge and competency in Python
• Knowledge and familiarity with GIS and mapping concepts.
• Experience with open source data visualization tools (e.g., ggplot2, plotly, D3).
• Experience with natural language processing.
• Experience performing analytics and evaluation within a government setting.
Working Conditions and Requirements:
The successful candidate must pass all required background checks to achieve Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification. Further background investigation may be required.

The role provides an opportunity to deepen analysis and communication skills on complex government projects and gain exposure to data analysis work in local government. The intern program includes structured opportunities to learn about the work of departments across the City of Boulder.
