Job Description: Audit Intern
KPMG is seeking an Audit Intern to join its Audit Services team. The intern will work as part of a team, playing a key role in conducting financial statement audits for capital markets clients. Responsibilities include:
• Financial Statement Audits: Contributing to the accuracy and reliability of client financial information while adhering to principles of objectivity and independence. Improving the overall effectiveness of clients’ operations while maintaining the highest professional integrity.
• Risk Assessment: Developing an understanding of client-specific risks by reviewing financial results, external information, business trends, and client transactions, primarily for Japanese clients or non-Japanese companies operating in Japan.
• Audit Documentation: Preparing clear and well-structured audit documentation detailing the understanding of clients’ processes and technology systems.
• Testing and Execution: Executing and documenting testing of client controls and financial statement account balances using established standards and terminology. This includes performing assigned tasks and maintaining professional interactions with clients and the engagement team.
• Data & Analytics: Utilizing data and analytics (D&A) in the audit process, including data extraction and analysis. Employing various technologies and data analysis tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), Excel, Alteryx, SQL, Python, and Power BI. Assisting in the preparation of related documentation.
• Professional Conduct: Maintaining integrity, professionalism, and personal responsibility, upholding KPMG’s respectful and courteous work environment.
Qualifications:
• Education: Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor of Accountancy, Master of Accountancy, or equivalent. Progressing towards CPA licensure requirements in the office’s location (completion of necessary academic credits before starting as an Audit Associate). Additional academic credits required upon internship completion to finish degree and/or meet CPA eligibility.
• GPA: Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Language Skills: Bilingual in English and Japanese, with the ability to use both languages effectively in a business setting.
• Technical Skills: Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data and analytics preferred. Experience with data analysis tools like Alteryx or Power BI is advantageous. Knowledge of technical accounting, financial reporting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) is necessary. Proficiency in various computer applications, particularly MS Office (especially Excel), and the ability to quickly learn KPMG audit tools and client applications is required.
• Soft Skills: Demonstrated quality service mindset; strong communication, time management, and relationship-building skills; sound professional judgment and professional skepticism; flexibility and adaptability as a team player; leadership experience; resourcefulness in delivering high-quality work; project management skills (a plus).
• Location: Must reside within reasonable commuting distance of the office and be able to travel to client sites as needed using personal transportation. Work will involve in-person presence at a KPMG office or client site for at least three days a week, with potential travel and overnight stays for certain client engagements.
