Job Description: Linearizing Spectral Reflectance for Color Management

This internship/graduation assignment focuses on the critical area of Color Management within the printing industry. Color consistency is vital when printing on different substrates (papers). The challenge lies in understanding the complex relationship between ink amounts, substrate type, and the resulting color appearance.

The Problem:

– Spectral reflectance (how much light is reflected at different wavelengths) is a key measurement of color.
– Spectral reflectance behaves non-linearly with respect to CMYK ink values, making color prediction difficult.
– Current linearization methods using negative logarithms are not optimal.

Your Task:

– Investigate how spectral reflectance behaves with respect to CMYK tone values.
– Develop and explore alternative strategies for linearizing spectral reflectance.
– Use mathematical tools like numerical linear algebra, scientific computing, statistics, and data science to find invertible mappings that linearize the data.

This is a challenging but rewarding assignment where you will:

– Gain valuable experience in applied mathematics and color science.
– Contribute to the development of cutting-edge printing technologies.
– Work alongside skilled professionals and learn from their expertise.

Requirements:

– Master’s level student in (applied) mathematics.
– Proficiency in a prototyping language like Matlab or Python.
– Strong academic writing skills in English.
– Ability to independently consult and critique scientific literature.

Benefits:

– Internship/graduation compensation of €500,- per month.
– Travel cost compensation (if not already covered by an ‘OV-weekcard’).
– Opportunity to network with professionals within and outside your field.
– Exposure to a dynamic and collaborative environment.
