About Tesla Finance

Tesla Finance is a dynamic team that combines traditional financial planning and analysis with broader business decision-making and strategy. They are embedded in daily operations, supporting both near-term execution and long-term planning. Finance team members are expected to analyze data, provide recommendations, and lead cross-functional decision-making and implementation with relevant executives and teams throughout the company.

The Internship Recruiting Team is driven by the passion to recognize emerging talent. Their year-round program places students in positions where they can grow both technically and personally through their experience working closely with their Manager, Mentor, and team. They provide an experience that allows interns to experience life at Tesla by giving them projects that are critical to their team’s success.

Job Description

The internship offers opportunities within the following sub-groups:

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A):

• Leads Tesla’s P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow forecast process, including reviews with Tesla’s Leadership and Board of Directors.
• Works with finance and non-finance stakeholders to analyze the impact of proposed business decisions.
• Develops and tracks cross-company efforts to improve gross margin and cash flow.
• Leads long-term planning for Tesla, including new products/capabilities, and capital needs.

Engineering Finance:

• Manages R&D investments/planning for Engineering (e.g., return on investment analyses for new technology development, resource planning, etc.) and develops associated forecasts.
• Tracks, reports, and proactively manages profit improvement (e.g., design proposals, supply chain initiatives) on existing vehicles.
• Supports product development by establishing cost targets and guiding engineering, design, and supply chain decisions towards attainment of these targets (i.e., cost vs. performance tradeoffs).

Manufacturing Finance (Fremont, CA, Sparks, NV and Austin, TX):

• Manages all manufacturing investments globally and develops associated forecasts.
• Evaluates major CapEx decisions and expansion plans as well as business cases on automation, manufacturing scope, insource vs. outsource choices, and location.
• Leads manufacturing cost improvement for all products, including feedback on estimated manufacturing costs for future programs, identification of focus areas for cost, and execution of identified initiatives.

Energy Products Finance:

• Consolidates inputs on business activities and develops financial projections; maintains projections and tracks actual financial performance against plan.
• Drives cost optimization in product development for existing and future products with a focus on establishment and attainment of cost targets.
• Leads pricing efforts for Energy Products, including installation and services, and business planning for global retail, service and sales enablement.

Sales, Marketing and Service (SMS) Finance:

• Manages investments into SMS activities, develops associated forecasts, and leads profitability analysis/improvement initiatives as the global and regional level.
• Leads pricing efforts, including options and services, and business planning for global retail, service and sales enablement.
• Develops and evaluates ROI for new markets, new business models, used vehicles, and service.

Interns will be assigned to one of the above subgroups based on prior experience, interests, and educational background.

Required Qualifications:

Evidence of exceptional ability, especially within an ambiguous environment
Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (Finance, Accounting, Engineering and other technical degrees are a plus), or equivalent.
A robust analytical skill-set
Excellent modeling skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Excel; experience with Microsoft PowerQuery/Power BI and/or SQL a plus)
Ability to work independently, detail-oriented, and execution focused
Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
Highly collaborative and team-oriented
