Job Description:
Mining Engineer Co-op (May 2025)
This is a paid co-op opportunity (7-8 months) for students pursuing a degree in Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or other related engineering disciplines. You will gain real-world experience at Cargill’s underground salt mine locations in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH, as part of the Cargill Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit.
Responsibilities:
• Operations Leadership &/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering: Work alongside production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors, or technical operations teams on critical initiatives and projects in a fast-paced, underground environment.
• Technical and Management Exposure: This co-op offers a blend of technical and management components, allowing you to develop your skills and understand the different aspects of the mining industry.
Potential Career Paths after Co-op:
• Mining Engineers: Work both underground with engineers and crews on active projects, and on surface supporting infrastructure. Learn mining techniques such as surveying and mapping, room and pillar mining operations, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and mining safety best practices.
• Electrical Engineers: Gain exposure to high voltage power infrastructure and extensive network of programming and control systems. Learn how to safely operate and automate equipment, including electric powered mining equipment, hoisting systems, pumps, conveyor belts, screening equipment, and other systems.
• Production Management Engineers: Lead people, process, and input/product in a mining environment. Supervise operators and production activities, participate in daily production management meetings, and learn how to handle MSHA federal regulations and compliance programs.
• Process/Project Engineering: Develop business cases, select vendors, manage budgets, and lead projects involving process optimization, safety, quality, infrastructure, and energy use. Contribute to innovation processes, idea generation systems, and reliability centered design.

Qualifications:
• Must be able to work in an underground environment.
• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Degree completion expected between December 2025 – May 2028.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
• Proven ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Geographically flexible and willing to relocate to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
• Available for a 7-8 month co-op in Summer and Fall (May/June – December 2025).
• High degree of initiative and resourcefulness.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Sophomore, junior, or senior currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program.
• Previous mining or heavy industrial co-op or intern experience.
• GPA of 2.7 or higher.
• Ability to apply technical knowledge to job duties.
• Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Leadership experience.
Compensation:
• Expected hourly rate: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour.
• Compensation based on graduation date and full-time employment eligibility.
