This program is designed to provide interns with focused departmental training, exposure to modern and contemporary art, and a comprehensive understanding of museum operations.
Job Description: Curatorial Department Intern
The Curatorial Department Intern program at MoMA offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a specific curatorial department. Interns will be placed in one of the following departments, based on need, areas of interest, and experience:
• Archives, Libraries, and Research Collections
• Film
• Painting & Sculpture (Master’s Degree is preferred)
• Photography
• Publications
As a Curatorial Department Intern, you will have the opportunity to:
• Assist with exhibition and collection research: This might involve researching artists, artworks, or specific themes for upcoming exhibitions.
• Process collection documentation or curatorial files: You will learn about how museums organize and maintain their collections, including cataloguing artworks, creating inventory records, and managing digital databases.
• Participate in archiving: You will contribute to the preservation and organization of archival materials related to the museum’s collections and exhibitions.
• Perform other duties as assigned: This could involve assisting with events, managing loan requests, or contributing to publications.
Ideal Candidate:
• Demonstrated experience with and interest in research and writing within Art History or a similar discipline.
• Confident, organized, articulate, and professional.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as well as basic Excel functions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, conscientious, and capable of multitasking.
Program Highlights:
• Integrated training: The internship program includes focused departmental training, integrated with the museum’s fall, spring, and summer lecture series.
• Research trip funding: Interns receive financial support to undertake a research trip related to their field of interest.
• Monthly cohort activities: The program includes monthly activities designed to expose interns to the museum and art fields.
• Full-time commitment: The program requires a full-time commitment (Monday-Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm).
• Stipend and benefits: Interns receive a $42,000 stipend (gross), health benefits, two weeks of paid vacation, and an additional $2,000 for travel expenses.
