The City of Virginia Beach’s Internship Program offers students a chance to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting. Internships are available in various departments, including Engineering, Information Technology, Library, Human Resources, Business, Communications & Media Relations, and Finance.
Eligibility:
• Currently enrolled student in an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s degree or PhD program
• Good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university
Typical Internship Responsibilities:
• Working on projects
• Assisting with day-to-day operations
• Attending meetings
• Site visits
• Meeting with stakeholders
Current Internship Opportunities:
# Traffic Operations Internship
Department: City of Virginia Beach Department of Public Works
Description: This internship program is designed to recruit diverse college students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. It offers viable full-time work experiences during the fall, connecting textbook knowledge with real-world applications.
Required Education: Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program.
Application Deadline: Open until filled, applications reviewed weekly from 8/8/24
Required Attachments: Resume, cover letter, and transcripts.
Duties May Include:
• Performing basic engineering analysis and field investigations
• Collecting traffic counts using automated counters & tube counters
• Assisting with inspection and inventory for City infrastructure assets, including signs & signals
• Updating and maintaining database records
• Uploading traffic count data into the traffic database system
# Management Analyst Internship
Department: City of Virginia Beach Office of Performance & Accountability
Description: The Management Analyst will work onsite and have the opportunity to meet with the City Manager and Deputy City Manager.
Required Education: Pursuing a Masters in Public Administration

Duties Include:
• Attending departmental and city-wide meetings with OPA staff
• Shadowing OPA staff for mentorship
• Assisting OPA analysts with the development, analysis, and use of performance measures
• Collecting, preparing, analyzing, synthesizing, reconciling, and translating performance measures, benchmarking, and related data into strategic recommendations and action plans
• Performing in-depth research and analysis, including reviewing available datasets
• Developing data visualizations using Microsoft products, such as Excel and Microsoft BI
• Assisting with analysis of survey data
• Assisting with special projects, such as research, data collection, and drafting documents
• Performing a variety of professional and technical duties in support of the City’s performance management, strategic planning, and process/continuous improvement efforts
