Accounting Intern – Columbia, SC | Mauldin & Jenkins
The Tone:
This is an internship at Mauldin & Jenkins, located in Columbia, SC. Mauldin & Jenkins, LLC is an established accounting firm seeking candidates for its Internship Program. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute directly to client engagements, spanning audits, management services, and the preparation of tax returns. This role is essential for developing robust technical skills and professional qualifications in a practical setting, ultimately contributing to both client success and the firm’s reputation within the profession. You will be an integral part of the team, working alongside other professionals in a technologically advanced and friendly environment.

• Mission: To assist with a range of accounting engagements, including audits, management services, and tax preparation, while developing essential professional skills.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Controls Evaluation: Assist with the study and evaluation of internal accounting controls, and test compliance where appropriate.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Account Reconciliation: Examine client reconciliations of bank accounts and subsidiary accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
• Expense Management: Schedule computations of accruals, document underlying support, and prepare schedules for write-offs of prepaid expenses and deferred charges.
• Tax Preparation Support: Review data input, identify and resolve technical tax issues, and assist in the review and preparation of tax returns.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level college student currently pursuing a degree with a major or concentration in accounting. Students must also provide their own housing and transportation for the duration of the internship.
• Experience: This internship does not require prior professional experience, but candidates should be prepared for the possibility of overnight travel as required for certain engagements.
• Skills:
• Demonstrate a well-rounded knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS), as defined in accounting and auditing literature.
• Possess a working knowledge of federal and state income tax laws and regulations, sufficient for tax return preparation.
• Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively articulate findings and interact professionally.
• Practice accuracy consistently when dealing with both numeric and alphabetic information.
• Develop proficiency in the use of available resources, including firm manuals and computer software.
• Bonus: Possess an awareness of current developments in the accounting profession and demonstrate a foundational understanding of the Firm’s operations and values.
