Project Accountant 1 | State of Ohio

The Tone:
This is a full-time or part-time, hybrid Project Accountant 1 role with the State of Ohio, Auditor of State, Local Government Services (LGS) Division, based in Columbus, OH, with travel to local government sites across the state. The Auditor of State is responsible for auditing nearly 6,000 public offices, ensuring fiscal accountability and integrity. In this role, you will provide essential financial consulting, analysis, and record reconstruction services to Ohio’s local governments. Your contributions will directly support the financial health and compliance of these entities, serving taxpayers across the state.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Gathering: Gather necessary financial information, prepare work papers, and apply assigned local government services procedures and techniques to specific client accounts and records.
• Compliance Review: Review completed work with higher-level LGS employees to ensure compliance with local government services procedures and techniques adopted by the Auditor of State.
• Report Assistance: Assist in the preparation of local government services reports and other work products under the direction of higher-level LGS employees, participating in meetings with local government officials alongside senior staff.
• Procedural Documentation: Aid in the study and documentation of transaction cycles and accounting procedures, helping clients determine requirements of laws and regulations and preparing necessary working papers and schedules.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An entry-level career professional with a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or successful completion of at least 16 semester hours or equivalent in accounting or a related field from an accredited college, university, trade, technical or vocational school beyond high school level.
• Experience: Possess at least three years’ experience in accounting or a related field if the educational requirements above are not met.
• Skills: Detail-oriented, organized, reliable, able to work under time-budget structure, effective oral and written communication, time management, and the ability to travel to audit site work locations.
• Bonus: A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is preferred.
