Staff Accountant | California School Boards Association
The Tone:
This is a hybrid Staff Accountant role at the California School Boards Association, primarily based out of our West Sacramento office. CSBA is a nonprofit education association dedicated to representing governing boards of public school districts and county offices of education. This role is crucial for maintaining the financial integrity of the organization, directly supporting policies that advance the education and well-being of over 6 million California schoolchildren. It offers an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with staff-level experience to take ownership of core general ledger functions within a mission-driven organization.

• Team: Finance and Facilities department, reporting to Senior Director, Finance and Accounting and Accounting Supervisor.
• Mission: Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization’s financial records through precise general ledger accounting and support for financial closes.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Dynamics Business Central (or similar ERP), Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups).
What You’ll Actually Do
• Reconcile: Manage monthly bank reconciliations for all operating and reserve accounts, independently investigating variances and determining appropriate resolutions.
• Prepare: Prepare, analyze, and post a variety of journal entries, including accruals and adjustments, ensuring adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Own: Take ownership of assigned account reconciliations and supporting schedules, contributing to successful month-end and year-end closes.
• Evaluate: Evaluate general ledger account activity for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification, applying discretion for ambiguous or non-routine transactions.
• Support: Provide backup support for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions as required.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; foundational understanding of GAAP and internal control principles.
• Experience: 1-2 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including proficiency in bank reconciliation, journal entry preparation, and AR/AP processes.
• Skills: Proficiency with accounting/ERP software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics Business Central), intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups), strong attention to detail and accuracy, effective verbal and written communication, and independent judgment in financial analysis.
